How do you read an airport weather report?
A METAR is a weather report written in code. It says which airport, what time, how windy, how far you can see, how cloudy, how warm and what the pressure is.
A METAR is an airport weather report in a short code. Once you know the pattern, you can read the wind, visibility, cloud, temperature and pressure at a glance.
The pattern
It starts with the airport code and the time (in Zulu, which is UTC). Then come the wind, the visibility, any weather such as rain, the cloud, the temperature and dew point, and the pressure.
Wind
24012G22KT means the wind is from 240 degrees at 12 knots, gusting to 22.
Cloud, temperature and pressure
FEW025 means few clouds at 2,500 feet. BKN040 means broken cloud (5 to 7 eighths of the sky) at 4,000 feet. 12/07 is a temperature of 12 °C and a dew point of 7 °C. Q1009 is a pressure of 1009 hectopascals.
